The Age Question Parents Always Ask
How often should kids visit the dentist? It depends on their age, dental health, and cavity risk, but here’s what we typically recommend at Just Kids Dental Dallas.
Infant dental care starts with the first tooth, and baby’s first dental visit should happen by age one or within six months of the first tooth appearing. We’ll gently check emerging teeth and gums while helping you build healthy brushing and feeding routines.
Toddlers (1 to 3 Years)
A first dental visit for toddler kids should feel simple and safe, with a gentle check for early cavities and healthy tooth development. Most toddlers visit every six months, often sitting comfortably on a parent’s lap.
School Age (4 to 12 Years)
Regular cleanings, fluoride, and sealants help protect growing smiles, while a space maintainer for kids may be recommended if a baby tooth is lost too early. Most children come every six months unless they need closer monitoring.
Teens (13 and Up)
Teens still need regular cleanings while we monitor wisdom teeth, sealants, and their changing dental needs. Those with braces or higher cavity risk may benefit from visits every four months instead of six.
SPACE MAINTAINERS: WHEN & WHY
until they need one. Here’s the situation: a baby molar gets lost to a cavity, or your child gets hit in the mouth and a baby tooth comes out early. The permanent tooth underneath isn’t ready to come in for another year or two. In that gap, the neighboring teeth can drift toward the empty space and close it before the permanent tooth has room to erupt.
A space maintainer prevents that. It’s custom-fitted to your child’s mouth, bonded to an adjacent tooth, and holds the space open. It’s painless. Your child gets used to it in about 24 hours. And when the permanent tooth is ready, we remove it.
Not every early tooth loss needs a space maintainer. We’ll assess it at your child’s checkup and let you know if one makes sense for your child.
